people here in vancouver rationalize the rain (when the rest of the country has snow) by obsessively repeating mantras like "you don't have to shovel rain" or "rain is liquid sunshine." i myself even quoted these sayings, trying to convince myself of their truth. but, this week, i've realized that it is simply a defense mechanism spouted by vancouverites in an attempt to make right their seasonal affective disorder and their weather-induced depression. no one REALLY likes rain - they couldn't possibly. my pant cuffs in this city are permanently dripping wet, our wooden side porch is growing a slippery algae-like moss that nearly caused me to break my neck the other evening, and i quite literally haven't seen hide nor hair of the sun since i was in ontario (over 2 weeks ago!). and the future forecasts are looking similarly dismal. the weather reporters are always sure to mention the slightest possibilities of sun in the forecast, but this really only gives us false hope. *sigh* time to batten down the hatches for another 2 staight months of rain... if i think really hard, i can sort of remember how nice it is when the crocuses are up in late february here :)

I think I have seen about 12 total hours of sunshine since I left Edmonton on december 20th. That's over a month ago!
