some items i bought, and our trip on the maui jim yacht: DAY 2

hawaii is known for its quilters; the art of "kapa" as it is known here. what i perfect souvenir it would be, i thought, to get a hold of some hawaiin fabrics and quilt patterns. interestingly, typical hawaiin quilting is done with solid coloured fabrics - not the brightly coloured floral prints we think of when we hear 'hawaii.'. it is appliqued onto a plain white background. the patterns apparently involve folding fabric into 8ths and cutting it to achieve a snowflake effect. i'll attempt the pattern in the above picture when i return home.

here daryan is on the maui jim sunglasses company yacht; the captain took us on a yacht trip around lahaina (the town near our resort). we got a full 2 hours of life on the high seas! some IRIS people went on the yacht earlier in the day and saw dolphins swimming along the side of the boat, but we, unfortunately, weren't so lucky. we did, however, get to enjoy some brews and some views!

Oh me oh my, I wish I was on that vacation with you! It is chilly here. That pattern looks very complicated Jill, but I am sure you will rise to the challenge and create a lovely quilt! Try to take some pictures of the birds for me ;)
